In 1886, she formed her own company, which travelled in the United States, South America, and Russia. Duse enjoyed a truly international fame. She was painted by John Singer Sargent, Franz von Lenbach, and Ilya Repin, and admired by Bernard Shaw, Charlie Chaplin, and Anton Chekhov. In July 1923, Duse became the first woman, whose portrait appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Several theaters in Italy are named after her. C4762 DUSE, E.
