Born in the town of Narva, Estonia, in the family of a priest, Vasiliev began his singing career in a church choir and continued at the School of Imperial Theaters. From 1956 for the next 25 years, Vasiliev sang at the St. Petersburg Opera Theater. Composers Alexander Borodin and Alexander Dargomyzhsky wrote special pieces for this singer.
