Kavelin graduated from the Law School of Moscow University (1839), and from 1844 to 1848 taught there. Later, he served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the General Administration of the Cabinet of Ministers, and headed the Education Department of the Imperial Headquarters for Military Educational Institutions. In 1857-1861, he resumed his teaching career as professor of St. Petersburg University and also taught law and Russian history to grand duke Nikolas Alexandrovich, Tsesarevich of Russia.
