Markuze (1835-1904) was the wife (since 1858) of Pavel Matveevich Olkhin (1830—1915), author of popular science and technology books, editor, and translator. In 1860, Russian publisher Maurycy Bolesław Wolff invited Olkhin to edit his new magazine “Around the World” (Vokrug sveta) (1861—1868). During these years, Olkhin and his family lived in Nuremberg, Germany. Sofia learned stenography and helped her husband in preparing materials for the magazine.
