As a child, Ivan sang in a church choir, then studied music in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Milan, Italy. Ivan debuted in 1867 at the Russian Imperial Opera and for the next 25 years was one of the lead opera singers in the country working primarily at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
