The gymnasium was founded by Maria's grandmother Sofia Arsenieva-Vitberg, daughter of Alexander (Karl Magnus) Vitberg, the author of the original design of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and a friend of writer Alexander Hertzen.
